We spend the next few days exploring our surrounds and taking stock. The nearby village of Saint Yrieix-le-Perche offers new scenery to explore including a very serious defensive tower. Built for harder times me thinks, as the only action in town is a very lively pizza restaurant. Still it’s an interesting spot.

Le P’Tit Bar is still our favourite place to eat and Sir Lunch-a-lot and I lose another happy day as he works his way through the menu. John Dory in a saffron sauce this time, whilst I fall back on my favourite goats cheese salad. Dish of the day though is a sour cherry frangipani tart that’s utterly divine. We have donkey company – they quietly set about landscaping as we lunch.

It’s only fair that the next day sees us on foot, walking off yesterday’s calories by exploring every inch of Segur-le-Chateau. We learn a little more about its history and grand houses, owned by prominent legal counsel of the day.

I meet the local tourism liaison officer and very sweet he was too.

In the middle of everything, we swap accommodation and back again as the gite we’re staying in had a prior commitment. We find a new bar to hang out in with a view of the chateau ruins.

And we wait…..
