2018 Day 52 – Meersburg

Happy birthday to me! A birthday in Germany is a first. Usually by this stage of our travels, we’re homeward bound, which most often sees us in France.

Chris has a lovely day planned across the lake, in Meersburg. A bonus of having a birthday overseas is that you get to celebrate it twice – it’s already happened at home so the morning comes with a bounty of birthdays wishes. Nothing like a slew of birthday love to make you feel special. 😊

The weather is perfect – rain was forecast, but it’s been banished to the evening. Lake Constance is stunning under perfectly blue skies for the crossing. We get a great view of Constanz harbour on the way out, framed in blues above and below.

The local blimp makes an appearance too.

Meersburg is the picture of charm. Nestled into the harbour, it winds uphill overlooked by a castle and vines.

With its pretty harbour, picturesque half timbered cottages and impressive town gates it’s a delightful birthday setting.

We settle for lunch: chanterelles in a light cream sauce on home made pasta for me, and a excellent yellow curry with prawns and scampi for Chris. A crisp rose rounds lunch out nicely.

After lunch, it’s time to explore: the up hill climb makes short work of lunch,

and the harbour walk is beautiful framed by shade trees, cafes and further down, a peaceful park.

There’s even a pair of white swans and many fat bumbles to complete the picture.

Late afternoon calls for birthday cake and coffee, sleep be damned.

There’s just time for a final walk around the harbour before we catch a late ferry back to Konstanz.

We toy with the idea of dinner out, but neither of us is hungry and to seal the deal the promised rain finally comes. It’s a great excuse to curl up, watch a movie and do very little indeed.

I’ve had a lovely birthday. Well done Christopher.
